What is Outbound?
Outbound was created to help businesses send “fewer, better messages.” Without requiring a complex, engineering-heavy implementation, Outbound helps businesses automate and deliver relevant messages across email, web, and mobile and better measure their effectiveness.
In May 2017, Zendesk acquired Outbound. With Outbound as part of the Zendesk product portfolio, we can help businesses meet the expectation of their customers—that the experiences and communication they deliver needs to be built around them, not around business departments and their siloed needs. Together, we are currently working on integrating Outbound with Zendesk’s family of products to create a two-way, multi-channel engagement solution.
In the meantime, you can try Outbound, and buy it as a standalone product for your multi-channel campaigns.
Why migrate to Outbound now?
Outbound offers you the ability to send intelligent, multi-channel campaigns today. Click the links below for more information on each feature:
- Multi-channel campaigns: Send a proactive campaign via email, mobile push, SMS, web push, or trigger a webhook.
- Trigger-based campaigns: Send a campaign based on a customer’s behavior or attribute, such as an item added to a cart, the fifth login in a week, etc.
- Measure campaign effectiveness with goals: Knowing that someone clicked on a link in your campaign is only part of the puzzle; often you want to see if they take a particular action after receiving a message. With Outbound, you can track that by defining campaign goals.
- A/B testing and control groups: How effective is this message if I send it via email versus web push? Do I need to send it at all or do my customers end up taking the action I want them to anyway? With Outbound, you can answer these questions by creating different message ‘variants’ within the same campaign. You can also assign some recipients to a control group, they will not get the message, which allows you to see whether or not sending a message has any impact.
- Integration with Segment.com and Amplitude: Outbound offers pre-built integrations with Segment and Amplitude. So if you’re already using one of those tools, you can bring in the user events that you care about and trigger campaigns off of those.
- User search: Locate and understand segments of your customer base that have performed certain actions or have certain attributes.
Migrating from Connect EAP to Outbound
To migrate to Outbound, you need to set up a 14-day free trial at outbound.io.
Exporting Connect Early Access campaign data
You export recipient data from a Connect campaign by clicking the ‘Export CSV’ button on the campaign reporting page.
Using the dropdown menu on the page to select which recipients you want to export, e.g. all those who have clicked on a particular campaign or all recipients and potential recipients, see the below example:
Migrating user data
Zendesk is currently working on an integration for Outbound to automatically bring in user and event data. In the meantime, you have a few options for bring in user data to use with Outbound campaigns:
- Upload users into Outbound via CSV
- Use the Outbound API or SDK if you have an iOS or Android app - more information on our developer site: https://developer.zendesk.com/embeddables/docs/outbound/introduction
- Use the Segment.com or Amplitude integrations to pass data into Outbound

Migrating from Connect in-product messaging to an Outbound web push campaign
To migrate Connect IPM to Outbound web push:
- Open the Outbound campaign page, and create a new broadcast campaign, by clicking Create new > Create Campaign > New Broadcast.
- Enter a name for your campaign.
- Upload users or select filters to define who should receive the campaign.
- Select Web Push as the variant channel.
- Design your Web Push message.
The Target URL is the web page that your recipient is taken to when they click on the Web Push message. See Using the in-website push channel for an explanation of the other Web Push options.Note: If you would prefer to design your own style Web Push message you can do so by overriding the default styles with code, see Displaying a custom notification for more information.
- Your campaign will be processed to go live! Once you see that your campaign is live, the next time a recipient logs in to your website they should see the Web Push message appear in the top right hand corner of their screen.
